John 2:12-17 – Jesus in the Temple: First Strike

After this Jesus went down to Capernaum, with his mother, the brothers, and his disciples, and he stayed there for a quite a few days.

The Passover Feast (of the Jews) was near and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. In the Temple area he discovered both sellers of cattle, sheep and pigeon and money-changers sitting there. He made a rope whip and drove them all out of the Temple, with the sheep and the cattle. He scattered the coins of the money-changers and over-turned their tables. And he said to the pigeon-sellers ‘Take everything from here. Do not make my Father’s house a house of commerce.’ His disciples remembered that it is written: ‘Zeal for your house will burn me up.’

God, give me grace to accept with serenity
the things that cannot be changed,
Courage to change the things
which should be changed,
and the Wisdom to distinguish
the one from the other.

Living one day at a time,
Enjoying one moment at a time,
Accepting hardship as a pathway to peace,
Taking, as Jesus did,
This sinful world as it is,
Not as I would have it,
Trusting that You will make all things right,
If I surrender to Your will,
So that I may be reasonably happy in this life,
And supremely happy with You forever in the next.

Amen.

  1. Thank you Derek for your daily boost to counter the exhausting emptiness of this weird time in the life of every person, every family, every country when Faith itself is questioned.
All the accepted signs of approaching Armageddon are manifesting themselves,
( not just the unspeakable orange person in the White House)fires, floods, famine, pestilence and now plague. I’m more optimistic than pessimistic as a rule but I really do miss being able to hug, physically embrace my nearest and dearest.
My granddaughter Honey was 15 two days ago and I was able to talk to her on FaceTime !!
So ¬ to be realistic,I know that I’m much more fortunate than thousands and thousands of people in the UK and abroad…I have a roof over my head, light, heat, water on tap,
clothes, enough to eat , good friends and the means to communicate but, but, but………. ..
I pray for my family and friends, I pray for the wider world and the suffering of millions and .as today;s message puts it, I will learn to live one day at a time and trust in the Lord
    ALLELUIA !!!

    • Thank you Sallie. Indeed the world we find ourselves is ‘strange’, when we thought that everything was ‘sorted.’ I think you are right to fasten on the good and eternal things.
