John 2:1-3 Time for a wedding

And on the third day a wedding took place in Cana of Galilee and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus (and his disciples) had also been invited. And when the wine had run out, Jesus’s mother said to him ‘They don’t have any wine!’ Jesus replied ‘Should I care for what you are care about, Lady? My time has not come yet.’ His mother said to the servants ‘Do whatever he says.’

Lord, you have given me so much,
I ask for one more thing –
a grateful heart.

  1. First he calls her mother not Lady this shows he respects her as his mother, second I have understood this passage as Mary empowers Jesus and that is important as the first time he is recognised for whom he is, and he needs that recognition but to do it in his way not ours. This is from the NEB.

    • Thank you Moya. Jesus most definitely does not call Mary ‘Mother’ in the Greek. The word is simply ‘Woman’ but most scholars suggest that this is not as harsh to ancient ears as to ours. Hence something like ‘Lady’. In itself the word does not speak about the son /mother relationship.
