John 20:11-18 The Appearance to Mary Magdalene

The Garden Tomb (not believed to be Jesus’s!)

But Mary stood near the tomb outside, crying. As she cried, she bent over into the tomb. And she saw two angels in white sitting, where Jesus’s body had been lying one near the head and one near the feet.

And they said to her: ‘Lady, why are you crying?’
She said to them ‘They have taken my Lord, and I do not know where they have placed him.’

Having said these things she turned around and saw Jesus standing (there) and she did not know that it was Jesus.

Jesus said to her: ‘Lady, why are you crying? Whom do you seek?’

Supposing that he was the gardener, she said to him:
Lord, if you are the one who has carried him away , tell me where you have placed him, and I will take him away.’

Jesus said to her:
‘Mary.’

Turning, she said to him in Aramaic: ‘Rabbouni’ (which means ‘Teacher’).

Jesus said to her: ‘Stop clinging to me. For I have not yet gone up to the Father. But go to my brothers and say to them: “I am going up to my Father and your Father, and my God and your God. “‘

Mary the Magdalene went, telling the disciples :’I have seen the Lord’, and that he had said these things to her.

Teach us, good Lord,
to serve thee as thou deservest;
to give and not to count the cost;
to fight and not to heed the wounds;
to toil and not to seek for rest;
to labour and not to ask for any reward,
save that of knowing that we do thy will,
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen
