John 19:23-24

The only archaeological remains from a crucifixion – a nail through an ankle

Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his clothes and made four parts, for each soldier a part – and there was the tunic. The tunic was seamless, woven throughout, from the top. They said to one another ‘Let us not tear it, but let us draw lots for it to see whose it will be.’ So the scripture was fulfilled:

They divided among themselves my clothes
And they cast lots for my clothing’.

Then the soldiers did these things.

Grant, Lord,
that we may hold to you without parting,
worship you without wearying,
serve you without failing;
faithfully seek you,
happily find you,
and forever possess you,
the only God,blessed now and for ever.
Amen

  1. Thank you for your work on this.
    I often think of Mary, Jesus’s mother who would have witnessed this pain, degradation and humiliation of her son. Then contrast that with the Magnificat!
