John 13:6-11 Washed and Clean

He came to Simon Peter. He said to him ‘Lord, are you going to wash my feet?’

Jesus answered ‘You do not know what I am doing now, but you will know after these things.’

Peter said ‘You will never ever wash my feet.’

Jesus answered him ‘Unless I wash you, you have no part with me. ‘

Simon said to him, ‘Lord, not only my feet, but also hands and head!’

Jesus said to him, ‘Someone who has been bathed does not need to have their feet washed, but is wholly clean. And you [all] are clean, but definitely not every one of you. For he knew his betrayer. Because of this he said ‘Definitely not every one of you is clean.’

Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart;
Naught be all else to me, save that thou art –
Thou my best thought, by day or by night;
Waking or sleeping, thy presence my light.

  1. The Hendriksen commentary says that Jesus also washed Judas’s feet knowing what he was later going to do, that was amazing thing to do if correct. I can see that the other interpretation is possible if so would not all the other disciples be alerted to what was going to happen and disrupt the dinner then whereas Judas later leaves the disciples to begin his part of the events.

    • Yes I agree that if Jesus washed his betrayers feet that would have been quite something. V12 implies that he went on after Peter to wash everyone’s feet, and the flow of the conversation following revolves around the betrayer being included. V29 seems to give reason enough for Judas leaving earlier than the others.
