  • Luke 12 32–40

    Do not fear,
    little flock,
    because your Father is pleased
    to give you the Kingdom.
    Sell your possessions
    and give alms,
    make a money bag, which doesn’t wear out,
    inexhaustible treasure in the heavens,
    where a thief cannot draw near
    nor a moth destroy.
    For where your treasure is
    there also is your heart.

    Let your loins be girded about
    and (your) lamps burning.
    be like people waiting for their master,
    when he returns home from the wedding
    so that when he comes and knocks
    immediately they might open (the door) for him.
    Blessed are those slaves,
    whom the master, coming, finds awake.
    Truly I tell you,
    he will make himself ready (to serve)
    have them recline
    and he will come and serve them.
    And even if in the second or third watch
    he comes and finds like that
    blessed are those ones.

    But know this
    that if the householder had known
    what time the thief was coming
    he would not have left him to dig through (into) his house.
    And you all – be ready, because the Son of Man comes
    at the time you do not suppose.

    Eternal God and Father,
    you create us by your power,
    and redeem us by your love,
    guide and strengthen us by your Spirit,
    that we may give ourselves in love and service
    to one another and to you;
    through Jesus Christ our Lord.
    Amen

  • Hebrews 11 1-3, 8-16

    Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. Indeed, by faith our ancestors received approval. By faith we understand that the worlds were prepared by the word of God, so that what is seen was made from things that are not visible…

    By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to set out for a place that he was to receive as an inheritance, and he set out, not knowing where he was going. By faith he stayed for a time in the land he had been promised, as in a foreign land, living in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise. For he looked forward to the city that has foundations, whose architect and builder is God. By faith, with Sarah’s involvement, he received power of procreation, even though he was too old, because he considered him faithful who had promised. Therefore from one person, and this one as good as dead, descendants were born, “as many as the stars of heaven and as the innumerable grains of sand by the seashore.”

    All of these died in faith without having received the promises, but from a distance they saw and greeted them. They confessed that they were strangers and foreigners on the earth, for people who speak in this way make it clear that they are seeking a homeland. If they had been thinking of the land that they had left behind, they would have had opportunity to return. But as it is, they desire a better homeland, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God; indeed, he has prepared a city for them.

    O Lord, in whom is our hope,
    remove far from us, we pray thee,
    empty hopes and presumptuous confidence.
    Make our hearts so right with thy most holy and loving heart,
    that hoping in thee we may do good;
    until that day when faith and hope
    shall be abolished by sight and possession,
    and love shall be all in all.

    JJJ Tissot: The Chaldees Destroy the Brazen Sea

    10 Listen to Yahweh’s word, rulers of Sodom!
    Give ear to our God’s instruction, people of Gomorrah!
    11 What use to me is the large number of your sacrifices? (Yahweh says).
    I’m full of burnt offerings of rams and the fat of fatlings.
    In the blood of bulls and lambs and goats I do not delight.
    12 When you come to appear to my face,
    who sought this from your hand?
    Trampling my courtyards –
    13 you will do it no more, bringing an empty offering.
    Incense is an offence to me, new month and sabbath,
    the calling of a convocation.
    I cannot bear trouble and assembly;

    14 your new moons and your appointed times
    my entire being dislikes.
    They’ve become a burden to me that I’m weary of carrying.
    15 And when you spread the palms of your hands,
    I shall lift up my eyes from you.
    Even when you offer many a plea,
    there will be no listening on my part.
    Your hands are full of bloodshed –
    16 wash, get clean.
    Remove the badness of your practices from in front of my eyes.
    Stop dealing badly,
    17 learn doing good.
    Require the exercise of authority,
    put the oppressor right,
    exercise authority for the orphan,
    argue for the widow.

    18 Come on, please,
    let’s argue it out (Yahweh says).
    If your wrongdoings are like scarlet,
    they’re to be white like snow.
    If they’re red like crimson,
    they’re to be like wool.
    19 If you’re willing and you listen,
    you will consume the good things of the country.
    20 But if you refuse and rebel,
    you’ll be consumed by the sword;
    because Yahweh’s mouth has spoken.

    Keep us, O Lord, while we tarry on this earth,
    in a serious seeking after thee,
    and in an affectionate walking with thee,
    every day of our lives;
    that when thou comest,
    we may be found not hiding our talent,
    nor yet asleep with our lamp unfurnished,
    but waiting and longing for our Lord,
    our glorious King, for ever and ever.

    Richard Baxter (1615-1691)

  • Luke 12 13-21

    Someone from the crowd said to him:
    ‘Teacher, tell my brother to divide with me
    the inheritance.’
    But he said to him:
    ‘Man,
    who appointed me judge
    or arbitrator
    over you (both)?

    And he said to them:
    ‘Take care!
    and guard (yourselves) from all (kinds of) greed
    Because is a person’s life
    is not about when they have abundance.’

    So he told them a parable:
    The field of certain rich man produced a good crop.
    And he thought to himself:
    What will I do,
    because I do not have somewhere
    to gather the harvest?
    And he said:
    ‘I will do this:
    I will tear down my barns
    and I will build bigger ones
    and I will gather there
    all my wheat and goods.
    And I will say to my Soul:
    ‘Soul, you have plenty of goods stored.
    for many years,
    relax, eat, drink, be glad.

    But God said to him:
    Fool, this night your soul
    is demanded
    from you.
    the things you have prepared – whose will they be?
    This is the way for those who store treasure for themselves
    and are not rich toward God.

    Lord God,
    you feed us with the living bread from heaven;
    you renew our faith,
    increase our hope,
    and strengthen our love.

    Teach us to hunger
    for Christ who is the true and living bread,
    and to live by every word
    that comes from your mouth,
    through Jesus Christ our Lord.
    Amen.

  • Colossians 3 1-11

    If you have died with Christ …

    So if you have been raised with Christ,
    – seek the things from above,
    where Christ is,
    seated at the right (hand) of God.
    – fix your thoughts on things from above
    not things on the earth
    for you have died
    and your life is ‘safe and hidden’
    with Christ
    in God.
    When Christ… your life… is revealed
    then you too
    will be revealed in glory
    with him.

    Therefore put to death…

    God, give me grace to accept with serenity
    the things that cannot be changed,
    Courage to change the things
    which should be changed,
    and the Wisdom to distinguish
    the one from the other.

    Living one day at a time,
    Enjoying one moment at a time,
    Accepting hardship as a pathway to peace,
    Taking, as Jesus did,
    This sinful world as it is,
    Not as I would have it,
    Trusting that You will make all things right,
    If I surrender to Your will,
    So that I may be reasonably happy in this life,
    And supremely happy with You forever in the next.

    Amen.

  • Psalm 49

    The leader’s. The Qorahites’. A composition.

    Listen to this, all you peoples;
    give ear, all you inhabitants of the world,
    Both ordinary people and important people,
    wealthy and needy together.
    My mouth will speak smartness,
    the talk of my heart will be understanding.
    I shall bend my ear to a poem,
    resolve my conundrum with the lyre.

    Why should I be afraid in bad days,
    when the waywardness of people cheating me surrounds me,
    People who trust in their resources,
    and take pride in the abundance of their wealth?
    Huh; it definitely can’t redeem someone;
    it can’t give God his ransom.
    The redemption of his life would be expensive;
    it would be insufficient permanently,
    So that he should live on permanently,
    not see the Pit.

    Because one can see that smart people die,
    the dimwit and stupid person perish together.
    They abandon their resources to others,
    whereas their inward thought is that their homes will be permanent,
    Their dwellings to generation after generation
    – they had called lands by their names.
    A human being does not lodge in honour;
    he is like cattle that perish.

  • Luke 11 5-13

    And (Jesus) said to them:
    ‘Imagine one of you has a friend –
    and he goes to him
    at midnight
    and says to him:
    ‘Friend, will you lend me three breads?
    Because my friend has come
    from the road to me,
    and I do not have anything
    to set before him.’
    And he answers from inside:
    ‘Don’t bother me,
    The door has already been shut,
    and my children are with me in bed.
    I cannot get up to give you (anything).’

    – I say to you:
    even though he will not get up to give (him anything)
    because he is his friend
    he will get up,
    because of his sense of shame
    he will give to him as much as he needs.

    So I say to you:
    ask and it will be given to you all
    Seek and you all will find
    Knock and it will be opened to you all

    For everyone who asks, receives
    and the one who seeks, finds,
    and to the one who knocks, it will be opened

    if your son asks for a fish
    Which father of you
    instead of a fish will give a snake to him?
    or again if he asks for an egg
    will give to him a scorpion?
    So if you then
    although you are evil
    know how to give good gifts to your children,
    how much more
    the Father who is from heaven,
    will give the Holy Spirit
    to those who ask him. ‘

    O Love, O God who created me, in your love recreate me.
    O Love, who redeemed me,
    fill up in me whatever part of your love
    has fallen into neglect within me.
    O Love, O God, who first loved me,
    grant that with my whole heart,
    and with my whole soul,
    and with my whole strength,
    I may love you.

  • Colossians 2 6-8

    So just as you received the Christ,
    Jesus, the Lord,
    continue to walk in him –
    being firmly rooted
    and (now) being built in him,
    and being strengthened in the faith,
    – as you have been taught.,
    abounding in thanksgiving.

    Watch that there is no-one
    who takes you captive
    through philosophy
    that is empty deceit
    derived from human traditions
    about the elemental spirits of the universe
    and not about Christ.

    Teach us, good Lord,
    to serve thee as thou deservest;
    to give and not to count the cost;
    to fight and not to heed the wounds;
    to toil and not to seek for rest;
    to labour and not to ask for any reward,
    save that of knowing that we do thy will,
    through Jesus Christ our Lord.
    Amen

    St Ignatius

  • Psalm 138

    David’s.

    I will confess you with all my heart,
    in front of the gods I will make music for you.
    I will bow low to your sacred palace,
    and confess your name for your commitment and for your truthfulness, Because you have made great above everything
    your name, your word.
    On the day I called, you answered me;
    you make me defiant in my being, with vigour.

    All earth’s kings will confess you, Yahweh,
    because they will have heard the sayings of your mouth.
    They will sing of Yahweh’s ways,
    because Yahweh’s splendour will be great.
    Because Yahweh is on high, but he sees the lowly;
    lofty, he acknowledges from afar.

    If I walk in the middle of pressure you will give me life;
    on account of my enemies’ anger you will put out your hand.
    Your right hand will deliver me;
    Yahweh will bring it to an end for me.
    Yahweh, your commitment is permanent;
    don’t slacken your hold of the things your hands made.

    Grant, Lord,
    that we may hold to you without parting,
    worship you without wearying,
    serve you without failing;
    faithfully seek you,
    happily find you,
    and forever possess you,
    the only God,blessed now and for ever.
    Amen

    St Anselm

  • Luke 10 38-42

    When they were travelling,
    he entered a certain village.
    A certain woman by the name of Martha,
    welcomed him as a guest.
    And she had a sister called Mary,
    and she sat beside the feet of the Lord
    and listened to his word.
    But Martha was distracted by much serving.
    And she came up and said:
    ‘Lord, is it of no concern to you
    that my sister left me alone
    to serve?
    So tell her to help me.’
    But the Lord answered her and said:
    Martha, Martha ,
    you are anxious and troubled about many things
    But one thing is needed,
    For Mary has chosen the better part
    which will not taken away from her.

    Thank you, dear Jesus,
    for all you have given me,
    for all you have taken away from me,
    for all you have left me.

    Thomas More (c.1478-1535)
