  • John 9:35 -41 The Blind Man Worships

    Jesus heard that he had been thrown out. When he found him he said to him: ‘Do you believe in the Son of Man?’

    He replied: ‘And who is he, sir? Tell me so that I might believe in him.’

    Jesus said to him ‘Now you have seen him, and in fact he is the one speaking with you.’

    He said ‘I believe, Lord.’ And he fell to his feet and worshipped him.

    And Jesus said to him: ‘I have come into the world for judgment in order that those who do not see may see, and those who see may become blind.’

    Some of the Pharisees, who were there with him, heard these things and said ‘We are not blind too, are we?’

    Jesus said to them ‘ If you were blind you would not have sin. But now that you say “we see”, your sin remains.’

    Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart;
    Naught be all else to me, save that thou art –
    Thou my best thought, by day or by night;
    Waking or sleeping, thy presence my light.

  • John 9:24-34 Deja vu

    So a second time, they called the man who was blind and said to him: ‘Give glory to God. We know that this fellow is a sinner.’

    He replied: ‘I do not know if he is a sinner. One thing I know: I was blind, until I could see.

    So they said to him ‘What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?’

    He answered: ‘I have spoken to you already and you have not heard. Why do you want to hear again? You do not want to become his disciples as well, do you?’

    They insulted him and said: ‘You are that fellow’s disciple, but we are disciples of Moses. We know that God spoke to Moses but we do not know where this fellow is from. ‘

    The man answered them: ‘This is an amazing thing – that you do not know where he is from, yet he opened my eyes.

    We know that God does not hear sinners,

    but he hears whoever is God-fearing and does his will.

    From time immemorial it has never been heard that anyone has opened the eyes of someone born blind.

    Unless this man is from God, he could have done nothing. ‘

    They replied: ‘You were born completely in sins, and are you trying to teach us?’

    And they threw him out.

    Lord, you have given me so much,
    I ask for one more thing –
    a grateful heart.

  • John 9:18-23 Ask him!

    But the Jewish leaders did not believe the story about him, that he had been blind and had gained his sight,  until they had called the parents of the man who had gained his sight. They asked them: ‘Is this man your son, the one you say was born blind? So how does he see now?’

    His parents answered: ‘We know that this man is our son and that he was born blind. How it is that he sees now, we do not know, or who opened his eyes, we do not know. Ask him, he is of age, he will speak for himself.’

    His parents said these things because they feared the Jewish leaders. For already the Jewish leaders had decided among themselves that anyone who confessed him as Messiah would be excluded from the synagogue.  For this reason his parents said ‘He is of age; ask him. ‘

    Lord, you have given me so much,
    I ask for one more thing –
    a grateful heart.

  • John 9:13-17 Looks might be deceiving

    They took the man who was previously blind to the Pharisees. It was the Sabbath day when Jesus made the mud and opened his eyes.  The Pharisees began to ask him how he could see again.

    He said to them ‘He put mud on my eyes and I washed myself and I now see.’

    Then some of the Pharisees said: ‘He is not from God – this man – because he does not keep the Sabbath.’ But others said ‘How can a sinful man do such signs?’ And there was a division among them. So they asked the blind man again: ‘What do you say about him, on the basis that he opened your eyes?’ He said ‘He is a prophet.’

    O Love, O God who created me, in your love recreate me.
    O Love, who redeemed me,
    fill up in me whatever part of your love
    has fallen into neglect within me.
    O Love, O God, who first loved me,
    grant that with my whole heart,
    and with my whole soul,
    and with my whole strength,
    I may love you.

  • John 9:8-12 Hardly Mastermind

    Then neighbours, and the people who had seen him before when he was a beggar, said ‘ This is not the man who used to sit and beg, is it?’  Some said ‘This man is him!’ and others said ‘No, it’s someone like him.’ The man said ‘It’s me!’

    So they said to him ‘How have your eyes been opened?’

    He replied ‘The man, called Jesus, made mud, and spread it on my eyes. He said to me “Get up and go to Siloam and wash.” When I had gone and washed, I could see.’

    And they said to him ‘Where is that man?’ He said ‘I don’t know.’

    Teach us, good Lord,
    to serve thee as thou deservest;
    to give and not to count the cost;
    to fight and not to heed the wounds;
    to toil and not to seek for rest;
    to labour and not to ask for any reward,
    save that of knowing that we do thy will,
    through Jesus Christ our Lord.
    Amen

  • John 9:1-7 It is daytime

    And as Jesus was passing by, he saw a man, who had been blind from birth.

    And his disciples asked him: ‘Rabbi, who sinned – this man or his parents – causing him to be born blind?’

    Jesus answered ‘Neither this man sinned nor his parents, but (he was born blind) with the result that the works of God might be revealed in his case. We must do the works of the one who sent me while there is daylight. Night is coming when nobody can work. While I am in the world, I am a light for the world. ‘

    Having said these things, he spat on the ground and made mud with the spittle, and spread the mud on his eyes then he said to him: ‘Get up and wash in the pool of Siloam (which means ‘Sent’. So the man left and washed; then he went home, able to see.

    Grant, Lord,
    that we may hold to you without parting,
    worship you without wearying,
    serve you without failing;
    faithfully seek you,
    happily find you,
    and forever possess you,
    the only God,blessed now and for ever.

  • John 8:52-59 Abraham and I

    So the Jewish leaders said ‘Now we know that you have a demon. Abraham died, and the prophets too, yet you say “If someone keeps my teaching, they will never ever experience death.” Are you greater than our father, Abraham, who was mortal?’ What is more the prophets died. Who are you making yourself out to be?’

    Jesus answered: ‘If I glorify myself, my glory amounts to nothing. It is my Father who is the one who glorifies me – about  whom you say  “He is our God”. And yet you do not know him.

    ‘If I were to say that I do not know him, I would be a liar like yourselves. But I know him and keep his word. Abraham, your father was overjoyed at the prospect of seeing my day, and he saw it and rejoiced.’

    Then the Jewish leaders said to him ‘You are not yet 50, and you have seen Abraham, have you?’

    Jesus said to them: ‘Truly, truly I say to you before Abraham was born, I am.’

    So they picked up stones to throw at him. But Jesus hid himself and left the temple.

    Thank you, dear Jesus,
    for all you have given me,
    for all you have taken away from me,
    for all you have left me.

  • John 8:48-51 Shame and glory

    The Jewish leaders responded: ‘Don’t we rightly say that you are a Samaritan and you are possessed by a demon?

    Jesus answered: ‘I am not possessed by a demon, but I honour my Father; you treat me shamefully. I do not seek my own glory. There is one who seeks it and judges.

    Truly, truly I say to you if someone  keeps my teaching, they will never ever see death.’

    Lord, make me an instrument of your peace:
    Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
    Where there is injury, pardon;
    Where there is discord, union;
    Where there is doubt, faith;
    Where there is despair, hope;
    Where there is darkness, light;
    Where there is sadness, joy,
    For your mercy and for your truth’s sake. Amen

  • John 8:38-47 Who’s the Daddy?

    (I know that you are Abraham’s descendants. But you seek to kill me, because my word finds no room in you.  That which I have seen at the Father’s side, I have spoken, yet you do what you have heard from your father. )

    They answered him ‘Our father is Abraham!’

    Jesus said to them: ‘If you are children of Abraham, you would be doing the things Abraham did.  But now you seek to kill me, a man who has spoken the truth to you, which I heard from God. Abraham did not do this. You are doing the works of your father.’

    They said to him ‘We were not born immorally – without a father. We have one father, God himself. ‘

    Jesus said to them: ‘If God was your father, you would love me, for I have come from God and I am now here. For I have not come on my own initiative but rather he sent  me.

    ‘Why do you not understand what I am saying? It is because you cannot grasp my teaching. You are from your father, the Devil, and you are intent on doing what your father desires. He was a murderer from the beginning and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies he speaks from his own nature, because he is a liar and the father of lies.

    ‘But because I speak the truth , you do not believe me.  Who among you can prove me guilty of sin? If I speak the truth, why do you not believe me? The person who belongs  to God hears the words of God. Because of this – that  you do not hear – you do not belong to God.’

    O Lord Jesus Christ,
    stay beside me to defend me,
    within me to guide me,
    before me to lead me,
    and above me to bless me,
    that with you and in you,
    I may live, and move and have my being,
    for ever and ever.
    Amen.

  • John 8:31-36 Slaves and Sons

    So Jesus spoke to those Judeans who had believed in him: ‘If you stay in my word, truly you show that you are my disciples. And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free

    And they said to him :’We are descendants of Abraham, and we have never been enslaved to anyone. “How then do you say that we will become free?”’

    Jesus answered them: ‘Truly, truly I say to you that everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin. But the slave does not stay in the household for life, rather the son stays forever. So if  the Son frees you, you will really be set free.

    I know that you are Abraham’s descendants. But you seek to kill me, because my word finds no room in you. ‘
